Happy Goat Coffee Company is (supposed to be) taking over the now closed De Mello Coffee location on 33 Brock Street in downtown Kingston. More on the “supposed to be” below.
During a trip to Ottawa in early July 2026, my husband Tom and I stopped at one of Happy Goat’s highest rated cafe locations, which is on Laurel Street and rated 4.6 stars with 1,240 reviews to date.
Happy Goat has a cool vibe! Looking at the photos of their other locations, they know how to design and decorate a space to attract people.
There was a lot to choose from, however, I stuck with my usual: a cappuccino with whole or 2% milk, and a sea salted chocolate cookie. Tom ordered his usual, a drip coffee with milk.
De Mello opened in the summer of 2025 and sadly closed its doors on July 4, 2026, having only been open a year. They are a Toronto-based roaster with three locations in the city, one in Concord (GTA by Vaughn) and believe it or not, one in South Korea!, so if you’re missing De Mello, plan a trip to Toronto or South Korea! All that being said, their website still shows that they have a location in Kingston, so I am not sure how up-to-date the aforementioned locations are.

Happy Goat is an Ottawa-based roaster with multiple cafe locations. They presently have 14 cafes throughout Ottawa, three in Gatineau, two in Montreal, a location opening in Guelph, one more in Ottawa, one in Renfrew, and of course, one in Kingston.
Interestingly, according to their website, their Kingston location will be on Princess Street, not Brock:
But on Google, it says Happy Goat is already open on Brock Street.
So what is it?
While getting to the bottom of this location issue is important, I’d like to shift back to whether Happy Goat is worth leaving the house for.
I’m all for trying something new, going out and exploring and deciding if something is worth the second trip. I think visiting this new cafe in Kingston, with its different decor from De Mello Coffee is a great idea and I encourage those interested to see whether it could be a location that they’ll go back to time and time again. For me, however, and those who ask for my recommendation will hear me say that Happy Goat is not worth leaving the house for.
